POETRYBOOKS

Bubbaku edited by L. A. Story Sikora
Bubbaku is a collection of haiku poems for the more enlightened redneck. Many in the target audience would not be caught dead reading poetry, so it might be wise to keep this volume in the outhouse, or locked in the glove box of the pickup, to be read while waiting for the light to change.
Haiku, as all y'all know, is a Japanese poetry form consisting of three lines. There are some syllable rules for haiku, but they don't apply to Bubbaku or to Bubbas--just like speed limit signs, calorie counters, born-on mason jar dates, and hunting and fishing restrictions. To give you an idea of what's inside, check out the following:
bubbaku #1
sparkling Christmas lights
Labor Day weekend
never looked more festive
bubbaku #2
weddin’ day
special occasions
to wear the formal flannel
We had some fun with this, folks. We hope you will, too.

Paranormal/Romance: Romancing The Paranormal by Denise Dumars
Interacting with the paranormal used to involve mediums, seances, the Ouija board, tarot cards, and other familiar metaphysical devices. Today, we live in a world saturated with technology, yet simultaneously fixated on the paranormal. Ghost hunting is the new fad that seems to be ever-expanding, and so we now see the explosion of technological interaction with the dead.
Alas, times change, but the desire to make contact with the beyond, to span the gulf between our loved ones on the other side and us, has not. This book is a meditation of sorts on our myriad ways of contacting the dead, meeting them on their own terms as well as on ours. It is inspired by many individuals, both those on this side of the veil and those on the other. It is about a special kind of love that we have for those who are no longer with us in our plane of existence...unless you believe, of course, that they are with us still in non-corporeal form.

White Shift by G. O. Clark
It may astound you to learn that almost everyone likes poetry . . . including you. You like songs, right? Whether it's country or rock or hip-hop, those lyrics often have a poetic sense to them, and sometimes even imagery that grabs you despite your proclamation of "I don't like poetry." For instance? Try these:
" . . . the nights rolled by like headlights shining on a lonesome strip of tar . . . "
Mary-Chapin Carpenter
" . . . I'd give my soul away to hold you once again . . . "
Lara Fabian
" . . . the only thing that keeps us [me and Jesus] distant is that I keep f**king up . . . "
Indigo Girls
" . . . I wished I could forget that I used to live . . . "
Dark Sanctuary
Right? Now try this snippet of science fiction poetry:
The Luddite robot
has trouble functioning
in our modern world,

spends most of his time
trying to rebut the evidence
from his own sensors.

Psst! There's more inside . . .

Barrow by Bryan Thao Worra
Yes, another poetry collection, published in perfect bound, trade paperback format, and another must-have and must-read. We'll push directly to the endorsements. Try this one:
“A cross between Rilke and Pink Floyd, genetically enhanced with scenes from Forbidden Planet, left to grow in a beaker, using steaming pho as its nutrient base. Barrow comes to life and crawls across the laboratory floor, stands up on multiple legs, and challenges the universe. This is more than pretty words, more than one man’s trip around the world, more than his considerable talent. Barrow asks questions we are afraid to ask when we’re sober, and reveals answers we have hidden away. This is a testament."
—Britt Fleming, editor of Northography
Sounds good? Guess what: Barrow's even better than that.

Beast by Erin Donahoe

The Book of Styx by eddy styx by C. M. Mattison
The Book of Styx is new wave avant-garde poetry that intersects the realities of two worlds: ours, and the Other. The things we dare not think and do, Eddy Styx [the alter ego of C. M. Mattison] revels in. The poetry is a novel way of exposing our human foibles so that we might wallow in them. After all, we can do what we want in the Other, because it's not really real . . . is it?
Styx/Mattison's poetry has been likened to that of an evil Kendall Evans. Come find out why.

Brushfires by David C. Kopaska-Merkel
David C. Kopaska-Merkel has a complex mind. He’s a geologist – a scientist who studies rocks for the state of Alabama; a science fiction and fantasy writer; and a poet. He takes an interest in mankind’s history, our present, and the future. He contemplates the microscopic and the macrocosmic. He is fascinated by not only our reality, but also by alternate realities. He likes to toy with concepts such as time travel, space travel, alien species, artificial intelligence — all the standard tropes and new cutting-edge concepts in science, in sf, and in fantasy.

Celestial Bodies by Keith W. Sikora
The poetry of Keith Sikora combines the basic elements of fantasy with intimacy to evoke emotions, images, and sensations of romantic illusion. Cyborg Chimera by Shelly Bryant
This is Shelly Bryant's first poetry collection, in perfect bound trade paperback digest format, and here's what Sun Li, Professor of Literature in Shanghai, China, had to say about it:
Do we or do we not have free will? That is the question this collection is centering around. Whether one is a believer in God’s creation or in natural evolution, and humans as the created or the evolved, physically bound by time and space, the question is the same: Are we mentally free from what has happened, is happening, and will happen? With a cool, ironic, detached tone, the poems probe into the topics of human institutionalization, programmed robots, and creatures blending the best and worst sides of nature. It is the interaction between the three, as in much of science fiction, that touches the soul of the reader and stays.

Dark Eden by Lewis Sanders
Dark Eden is a collection of scifaiku, a perfect-bound book. If you've come looking for profound insights into the meaning of life, forget it. That's not what scifaiku does; it's not what it's for. No, scifaiku is a door cracked open, a glimpse in a mirror, a shadow in a corner. In few words, scifaiku gives you a glimpse of an idea, a shadow of a nuance, a glimmer through the peephole. Add the three lines of a scifaiku together, and you come up with an image. It's yours to ponder, mull over, think about. Perhaps you'll smile. Perhaps you'll cringe. Most of all, perhaps you'll wonder.
Scifaiku is like that. So is Henry Lewis Sanders.

Dreaming of Days in Astophel by Lyn C. A. Gardner
Gardner's collection of fantasy and science fiction takes you to the ends of the universe, real and imagined, and back again. It's been said that a picture is worth a thousand words; so are Gardner's poems. Here's an example:
Our golden age is here: now we embark
Upon a quest to take back all our years.
We'll not see Earth again--yet our delight
Shines bright in holos of our grandchildren,
Already grown while we sit nine years hence,
Bathed in radiation's lethal warmth
Above an alien, life-giving soil,
Secrets to send back to dying Earth.
Who else would go, to die? They hail us Glenns,
After the man who proved it could be done.
There are no twilight years out where the sun
Shines all the time--and falls, sans gravity,
Now make us laugh like children. We give life
To an end that holds eternity for all--
To save the Earth, change Gold Years back to Green.

The Engagement of the Spur by Janie Hofmann
The poetry of Janie Hofmann takes its inspiration from many sources, especially mythology and science fiction, which she skillfully blends to present a provocative vision of the way things were, are, and ought to be. She speaks of the never-ending duty of an astronomer:
. . . Were I to rest one night, what single shred
of comet, tail-spin of star, or tiny key to Cassiopeia
would I miss?
and of human passion:
The heat was a human drum, its skin
pulled tight around us, its heart
underneath our backbones, up inside
the hot rhythm we made between ache and breath.
and of betrayal:
Now shackled, even the shoreline
wounds me. Though I pine
for the sea once again
it never was my friend.
with equal fluidity and depth. She is more than worth an evening under a reading light, pausing, and pondering.

The Handless Maiden and other Tales Twice Told by JoSelle Vanderhooft
These 28 poems by Bram Stoker Award-nominated poet JoSelle Vanderhooft explore, change and dissect several of the stories that have enthralled and inspired humans for centuries. Within these pages, a hungry Little Red Riding Hood stalks a callow young wolf. The frog prince meditates on the eternal battle of the sexes. Helen of Troy is unveiled as a museum exhibit. A heroic prince sacrifices himself to a dragon to appease his people, and a young girl sacrifices her hands to protect her beloved father from the Devil. Melancholy, triumphant, harrowing and sometimes darkly sexy, these twice-told tales honor the stories of the past by molding them into the stories of the future.

The collection focuses on poetry about and/or inspired by people she knows or think she knows or who know her. The collection is so extensive that even you--yes, YOU--may be in there somewhere. Consider, for example, some of the titles in this collection:
My friend, the storm maker
My friend, who writes in her dreams
My friend who’s not from earth
My friend, the literary genius who wants to do me in the back of his Jeep Cherokee
My friend who turns blue when she sees pyramids
As Relf writes: "Are these people real? Did this stuff really happen? I’ve heard it said that some things are just too weird to have been made up, other events are just too mundane to have been made up, and the rest, well, it’s “just" poetry, and so it may be all purely invention."

On Metallic Wings by Angel Favazza
On Metallic Wings is a perfect bound book. In it, Angel Favazza's poetry illuminates the human condition with the bright beam of technology and casts doubt on our ability to cope with our future. With Orwellian brushstrokes she paints a future every bit as questioning and bleak as that which Winston Smith faced, and makes us question ourselves in the ways we employ technology toward solving the difficulties of our everyday lives. And like Orwell, she leaves it up to us as to whether we want it that way.

On the Brink of Never compiled by David C. Kopaska-Merkel
The ancient Maya had a rich mythology. Their religious beliefs included the notion that the world would end on December 21, 2012. For reasons best known to themselves, hordes of modern folk have converted to this ancient religion. If belief sustains the existence of gods, as some have suggested, then perhaps it also sustains the validity of prophecy. I hope not. Because if belief alone can make prophecy real, millions and millions of lapsed Abrahamic religionists may have doomed the rest of us to extinction along with themselves. Nice going guys! In a spirit of hopelessness and despair, engendered by the realization that a boatload of gullible fools are taking us with them into oblivion, we offer the following tribute. I don't know what day you bought this book, but just in case: read fast!
~ David C. Kopaska-Merkel, Terra, Year N-2
"The look in your wife's eyes,
and her courage as she turns off the TV, forcing smiles
as she calls the children to come down and play
their favorite board game, after the confirmed report
that dawn will never come again."

Scifaistew is a collection of scifaiku and tanka and haibun by Teri Santitoro, editor of Scifaikuest. Here's what Tyree Campbell had to say about it: " . . . I've read it, several times. It's that kind of collection. I'm . . . astonished at how good it is. A haibun titled "The Tin Man's Ax" is worth the price of admission alone. If you buy only one collection of scifaiku a year, this is the one for 2007. Seriously."

Sometimes While Dreaming by Marcie Lynn Tentchoff
In this collection of forty-eight poems (thirty-seven of them previously unpublished), Aurora Award winning poet, Marcie Lynn Tentchoff offers glimpses into different types and realms of dreams. Sometimes While Dreaming takes the reader into misty worlds of fantasy, and darker worlds of nightmare, lingering in our own waking world, but portraying it as changed and alien. The collection deals with different viewpoints, with people and creatures torn from their own realms of belief, transformed beyond their own imaginings, or simply trapped by law, spell, or inner emotion in situations outside of any human norm.

The Tin Men and Other Poems by Kendall Evans & David C. Kopaska-Merkel
It should be illegal for Evans and Kopaska-Merkel to be in the same room together . . . in the same city, hell, even on the same continent. They feed off one another. Each word by one leads to an inspired thought by the other, and so the process continues until a statement is born--in this case and in this volume, a poem. Or worse.
Call them absurdist? Okay. Call them out of their cotton-pickin' minds? Could be. How about "a sharp stick in the eye of convention"? A-yep!
Let's put it this way: the hamburger you see sizzling on their back-yard barbecues comes from your sacred cows. You might as well bring along the buns and the condiments, and enjoy it . . .

Touched by the Gods by Sandra J. Lindow
"Whether she is going to the post office, gardening, doing laundry or sewing for her daughter, there is a 'sanctification on the altar of daily life' in her activities."
Roger Dutcher, The Magazine of Speculative Poetry
"You cannot stop the hands of time, but you can have them Xeroxed." If ever a poetry collection is to be called a "Must Read", it's this one. Read it often, keep it close.
Marge Simon, 2008 Stoker winner: Vectors: A Week in the Death of a Planet
"Lindow's pantheon, from Juno to Quetzalcoatl to Pokeman, may not be entirely beneficent, but under the aegis of such gods, this splendid poet dispenses tonics for the heart, medicine for the soul."
Mary Turzillo, Nebula Award Winner, and author of Ewaipanoma

Twenty-One Novel Poems by Suzette Haden Elgin
Suzette Haden Elgin's Twenty-One Novel Poems is not your typical book of poems because.....
1. It's a book of science fiction (and science fiction fantasy) poems.
2. Every one of the twenty-one poems tells a story.
3. There's a "Reader's Guide" at the back of the book, with a commentary by Elgin about each poem, plus questions and topics for discussion.
4. The book will have a homepage at Elgin's website http://www.sfwa.org/members/elgin, with additional materials.
5. It's interactive. For four of the poems, Internet addresses from Elgin's Live Journal blog are included -- where you can see the poem being written, with earlier drafts and with comments from her readers. And where you can join the discussion and post your own comments about the poems and the poem-making process.

The Uber Cat & Dragon Owner's Manual by Marge Simon & Mary Turzillo
Do the curtains burst into flames when your dragon sneezes? Is the dragon litter box cluttered with fragments of princess tiaras? Has the cat sabotaged the TV remote so that you can only watch cat food ads? Do feline vixens use the scratching post for late-night pole dancing? Do you find yourself wandering aimlessly about the house, crying out, "Who's in charge of this place, anyway?"
Cats and dragons do not come with owner's manuals. You have to buy these separately--and trust me, cats and dragons have planned it that way from the get-go. If they can keep you from buying this book, the answer to the question you keep crying out is, "Them!"
So buy this manual. Study it carefully. You still have a chance to get some semblance of your life back.

Under the Ash by Shelly Bryant
The title comes from the connection of the ash tree to the element of fire, as well as being a reference to Norse mythology of the World Tree. With the name Yggdrasil, this was a giant ash tree at the center of the universe connecting the various worlds and with roots extending to under regions and branches reaching above and to the sides of the human world. The human world is at the center and therefore one of the main things “under" the ash. This works well as a metaphor to pull together the various material included in this collection since it considers more than one simple world. You won’t be bored with just one subject or form of poetry.

Unearthly Delights by Marge Simon
Unearthly Delights features both the poetry and art of Marge Simon. Over twenty color interiors make this a most unusual poetry collection, once again outdoing the "big box" publishers. Here are a couple of endorsements:
In Unearthly Delights, Simon's fine haired paintbrush morphs into an ornate fountain pen, its strokes that of a sharp blade on the one hand, pastel caresses on the other. Her poetic canvas knows no boundaries; space, time and the human heart all masterfully posed. Step inside her unreality museum, it will suddenly become quite real.
-G. O. Clark, author of Mortician's Tea

From the ekphrastic to the eccentric, Marge Simon's poetry paints otherworldly pictures ranging from portraits to landscapes to whole worldscapes. Her poems peel back the mask of reality to reveal the dark edges of strangeness hiding beneath.
-Geoffrey Landis, author of Iron Angels

VAMPS (A Retrospective) by James S. Dorr
Meet just one of the vamps in this book:

Nikki flies! God — no, she mustn't
say that name — but glory how she sweeps
and dives, her bat-wings whistling, snap rolls, up,
across the moon.
Of course she stays inside
by day, confined by satined wooden walls
and, yes, her dining habits have been changed.
But evening comes, with dark, with wind, with moon,
with long jet hair whipped in the slipstream of
her climb
— and Nikki flies!

Now come meet the others . . .

Virgin of the Apocalypse by Corrine De Winter
Marge Simon says:
"DeWinter’s masterful verse awakens awe with every stroke. It was sheer pleasure to illustrate this marvelous collection. May your conscious wander freely through the treasures herein, and come away in wonderment recalling lines like these:
“I have only these hands
of pale comfort,
of wilderness and discretion,
of atom bombs and struggle,
of ecstasy and clay
to save you."

Voices of the Elders by Shelly Bryant
What I've always loved about Shelly's writing is the breadth of genres and periods in which she embeds her thoughts. There are few writers who will quite so fearlessly juxtapose classical Anglo-Saxon fantasies about fairies and dragons with ruminations on supernovae, historical fiction with futurism, cynical politics with whimsy. Voices of Elders is no exception in this regard and, like many of her other poetry collections, remains unfettered by temporal logic. Voices seems to mirror the human thought process, to revel in the limitless capacity of the imagination to weave impossible threads through distant fabrics, at times concerned only with the poignancy of images, and at times prodding the recesses of human behavior, our war, pride, sadness, and achievement. Hers is the writing of visceral experience as opposed to fabrication. It is a work with the nature of humanity in the face of mortality very much at its core.

Wild Hunt Of The Stars by Ann K. Schwader
Wild Hunt Of The Stars is Schwader's tour de force. That's French for "My God! It's full of stars!" Or maybe that was 2001 A Space Odyssey. Anyway, it applies here. Each poem is a brilliant point of light on its own merit. Deborah Kolodji, who wrote the introduction, had this to say, among other things:
"Wild Hunt of the Stars is a book filled with “familiar terrors tearing at our sleep" as well as “quantum tantrums" you could have never imagined. Through it all, each poem is a testament to craft, each verse a testament to the incredible depth of Ann’s imagination."

You Are Here by Gene Van Troyer
It's Gene Van Troyer's opus magnus. Do they still say opus magnus? Anyway, it's Gene's biggie. It's poetry, and it's off-beat. Gene belongs in the same crowd as Kendall Evans, s.c. virtes, David C. Kopaska-Merkel, and the guy who came up with Bloom County. This collection of poetry comes with illustrations by Marge Simon and . . . collages, I suppose you'd call them, by Gene himself, one of which is on the cover.
